Worldline is set to introduce Wero, the European Payments Initiative’s (EPI) new instant payments solution, to e-commerce merchants in Germany starting this summer.

The rollout will continue in Belgium this October, with France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands to follow in early 2026 – marking a significant step towards building a pan-European alternative to international wallets and card schemes.
A long-standing founding shareholder in the EPI Company since its creation in 2020, Worldline is now taking an active operational role as Wero’s adoption expands from its original peer-to-peer use case to digital commerce.
The launch of Wero for online transactions signals a pivotal moment in Europe’s ambition to establish a sovereign, interoperable payment infrastructure.
Built on the foundations of instant bank transfers, Wero allows consumers to pay directly via their trusted bank applications.
With over 40 million base users across the EU, Wero offers seamless payment flows using just a mobile phone number.
The solution includes robust buyer protection and a dispute resolution mechanism – features often lacking in traditional bank-to-bank transfers – making it well-suited for online retail.
For merchants, Wero offers an attractive alternative to legacy payment methods. In addition to lowering chargebacks through explicit payment consent and pre-dispute tools, it promises higher conversion rates via a frictionless checkout experience.
Crucially, Wero is designed as a full omni-channel solution, with in-store acceptance set for 2026, enabling retailers to unify their physical and digital payments strategies.
EPI CEO Martina Weimert described the launch as a foundational milestone for Europe’s payment ecosystem transformation.
