Nuvei has joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI), in a move that will see the Wero digital wallet integrated into ecommerce checkouts across Europe.
This strategic partnership marks a significant development in Europe’s pursuit of payment sovereignty and a more unified digital payments ecosystem.
Wero, EPI’s flagship digital wallet, leverages SEPA Instant Credit Transfer infrastructure to facilitate real-time account-to-account (A2A) payments.
Users can send funds within 10 seconds using mobile numbers, email addresses, or QR codes – offering a seamless and secure alternative to card-based payments.
Since its launch in Germany, France, and Belgium in late 2024, Wero has already amassed more than 40 million users, with expansion to the Netherlands and Luxembourg imminent.
Through its early adoption of Wero, Nuvei will enable ecommerce merchants to accept the digital wallet via a single integration with its platform.
This streamlined access is expected to give merchants a competitive edge in catering to evolving consumer payment preferences.
While pilot programmes are set to begin in May 2025, full availability is targeted for September.
Philip Fayer, Chair and CEO of Nuvei, noted that the partnership speaks directly to Europe’s strategic ambition for payment autonomy and consumer-centric innovation.
“Integrating Wero aligns with our commitment to empowering merchants through next-generation payment technologies. It enables them to deliver locally preferred, fast, and secure payment options at scale,” he said.
EPI CEO Martina Weimert echoed the sentiment, highlighting Nuvei’s expansive merchant network as key to Wero’s accelerated ecommerce adoption.
“This partnership is a critical step in creating a unified European payment landscape – one that reflects local needs while enhancing cross-border efficiency and innovation.”
As e-commerce continues to grow and consumer demand for fast, low-cost, and user-friendly payment experiences intensifies, solutions like Wero are poised to become central to Europe’s financial infrastructure.
