Ripple Wins Final OCC Approval to Launch National Trust Bank

Ripple has secured final approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to launch Ripple National Trust Bank, giving the blockchain company a federally supervised platform for digital asset custody and management of reserves backing its RLUSD stablecoin.

The approval follows conditional authorisation granted in December and marks a significant step in Ripple’s effort to position its digital asset infrastructure firmly inside the regulated financial system.

The national trust charter does not allow Ripple to take deposits or conduct commercial lending. It will, however, permit the company to provide fiduciary digital asset custody services, manage RLUSD reserves and act as collateral trustee for those assets.

Ripple chief executive Brad Garlinghouse described the development as evidence that crypto and traditional banking can operate more effectively together under formal regulatory oversight.

RLUSD Moves Closer to Institutional Infrastructure

The charter is particularly significant for RLUSD, Ripple’s US dollar stablecoin.

BNY has served as the stablecoin’s primary reserve custodian, and Ripple is simultaneously expanding its relationship with the bank to support institutional custody and additional blockchain-based financial use cases.

Under the expanded collaboration, BNY will support both XRP and RLUSD through its digital asset custody platform, while the two companies intend to explore applications including tokenised trade finance.

Ripple says the next phase of institutional adoption is moving beyond simply issuing assets on-chain towards making them usable for payments, collateral and other capital-markets activities.

BNY is also expected to explore allowing institutional customers to mint and redeem RLUSD directly through its infrastructure.

Robinhood Extends Stablecoin Distribution

Ripple has also broadened the reach of RLUSD through a strategic partnership with Robinhood.

The stablecoin is now available on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp, with availability through the main Robinhood application expected later this year.

Robinhood can also use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement, extending the stablecoin’s potential role beyond retail trading into financial operations.

Crypto Infrastructure Moves Inside the Regulatory Perimeter

The OCC decision comes after years in which Ripple operated under considerable regulatory uncertainty, including its lengthy legal dispute with the Securities and Exchange Commission over XRP.

Its strategy has since increasingly centred on regulated financial infrastructure, supported by acquisitions across brokerage, stablecoin payments and treasury technology.

The trust-bank approval strengthens that positioning by giving Ripple direct federal supervision without turning it into a conventional deposit-taking bank.

The broader significance is that digital asset companies are no longer simply building alternatives to banking infrastructure. Ripple’s strategy increasingly reflects a different model: bringing stablecoins, custody and tokenised assets inside the regulated financial system itself.
