Worldpay expands into Thailand as domestic acquiring surges

Worldpay has announced its entry into the Thai market with domestic acquiring capabilities, marking another strategic move to strengthen its Asia Pacific presence.

Worldpay expands into Thailand

This expansion enables Worldpay to support Thai merchants with local settlement in Thai baht, enhanced authorisation rates, and access to popular alternative payment methods such as LINE Pay, TrueMoney, PromptPay, and online banking.

Gabriel de Montessus, president of global enterprise at Worldpay, highlighted the evolving payments landscape in Thailand, characterised by a rapid shift away from cash towards digital wallets and account-to-account (A2A) payments.

“For merchants operating in Thailand, delivering a seamless and secure shopper experience is paramount,” De Montessus said. “Our in-market experts will help them navigate the complexities of payments, optimise their offerings, and unlock significant growth opportunities.”

Thailand becomes Worldpay’s ninth domestic acquiring market in Asia Pacific, alongside Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, India, and South Korea.

The expansion reflects Worldpay’s broader strategy to enable global merchants to serve local consumers using their preferred payment methods while benefiting from robust fraud protection, dispute management, and efficient settlements.

Thailand’s e-commerce market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 9% through to 2030, according to Worldpay’s latest Global Payments Report.

The country’s rapidly digitalising consumer base is driving demand for both international card acceptance and alternative payment solutions that cater to local preferences.

Worldpay’s Thai launch follows its recent expansions in Colombia, Mexico, and the UAE, aligning with its strategic goal to extend domestic acquiring capabilities worldwide.

With a single integration point for over 170 countries, Worldpay continues to position itself as a partner of choice for businesses seeking seamless global payments infrastructure with deep local expertise.
